More time in Zanzibar

Filed under: Tanzania — stephane @ 5:29 pm

I have decided to stay a couple more days here in Zanzibar and more exactly Nungwi. Pete from Sensation Divers gave me a good price so that is really interesting. Moreover I found that I can fly for $106 from Zanzibar to Nairobi with Air Kenya making a ferry/bus trip totally useless. Wies should probably join me by tuesday and start her Open Water course (first step to be certified) she will probably stay 2 weeks around Zanzibar and I will probably leave by the end of this week. Note, that it has been raining all night and the day has been cloudy here. Maybe the rainy season is really starting. It is already a month and a half late and I have had excellent weather both in Kenya and Tanzania. Everything has an end.

Anyway, because of the weather I chose not to join all divers that were heading to Mnemba island and I chose to do local dives. It could not have been better, I was the only one and therefore could enjoy long dives without having people sucking too much air (and walking on corals !). I did 2 dives (20 meters max) for a total of 2 hours and 43 minutes underwater. As the average dive is around 45 minutes most of the time with divers not really watching their air consumption (or/and being a little bit too excited underwater…) you get the idea how much time more you get when diving like this. Moreover you’ve got plenty of time to watch around. As we were moving slowly with no one to chase things, we saw nearly everything interesting: lobsters, leaffish, nudibranchs, morays, eels, blue spotted stingrays, stonefish, scorpionfish, … Top-notch dives ! I’m very happy with it and I’m so glad I moved from Stonetown !

Sorry for not posting pictures but internet here is really expensive. I promise to do it later however (I have already 7MB to upload for next time…)

  2. Hi, I am really enjoying reading your posts as I am in a really busy season in my life. I am really intrigued that you have taken a year to travel. I found you online because I’ve been researching getting a Fujitsu P2120 and your website appeared in the search engine. I wonder how that computer has been working for you during your travels? Enjoy your day – I’m in California where it’s windy and in the 80′s and I have a busy day ahead. Happy diving or whatever you’re going to do today!

  3. I’m very happy about the P2120 and I could not dream about better computer for what I’m doing. It is very small, lightweight and convenient. The factor size is a definite plus as NO ONE suspect you can have a computer.

I have passed customs in some countries where they normally tax laptops to avoid fraudulent imports (and you get your money back when leaving) and even when looking at my backpack they probably though it was some kind of purse with books or stuff ( I have a tight caselogic neoprene case that fits it like a glove)

I carry it in my daybackpack when doing long travels and never had any problems. As I said no one can suspect that I have a computer in my backpack, it does not scream ‘EXPENSIVE HARDWARE’.

The screen is absolutely amazing. Sharp and colorful. On the bad side, it is not very powerful and some applications requires a long time to start (because of the Crusoe) but I knew it before buying it and I can live with it anyway especially as I use it from time to time for a DivX or listen some MP3s when browsing through all the pictures. Main use is for unloading pictures and for now after 3 months it reaches about 2.5GB

I would take it again anytime when travelling. No regrets at all.

The fact that you have an internal DVD/CDRW is also a definite plus.
