Real movies available on Joost

It has been a while since I did not post anything barely useful for the rest of the humanity (mm..) , but …for those who are following the online video ecosystem (and thus what’s happening at Joost somehow), they should be pretty happy to note that a range of movies (real movies) from Paramount Pictures are now available.

Movies are limited for now to Paramount France (in French), Paramount Germany (in German), Paramount Spain (in Spanish) and Paramount UK and Paramount US (in english of course). They do have some movies in common but some are pretty exclusive to the country mentioned.

In France you can find movies such as: Presidio (Sean Connery, Meg Ryan), Liaison Fatale (Michael Douglas, Glenn Close), Zoolander (Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson), L’enfant sacré du Tibet (Eddie Murphy), Simetierre (from a Stephen King novel), 100 dollars pour un shérif (John Wayne), …

In the UK: Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Audrey Hepburn), Hunt for Red October (Sean Connery, from Tom Clancy’s novel), Patriot Games (Harrison Ford, from Tom Clancy’s novel), Fatal Attraction (Michael Douglas,Glenn Close), Escape from Alcatraz (Clint Eastwood), Intersection (Richard Gere, Sharon Stone), Congo (Dylan Walsh of Nip-Tuck fame), …

I’m not aware of such movies available legally in any other video online system, so it’s really nice to have it and I look forward to have the collection growing up. I’ll follow with interest what the usage pattern will be on those.

I understand the frustration of users facing georights issues and not being able to watch it in their own but sadly it is the consequences of something that happen before companies started to think more in a global way. Most of the times production companies have negotiated rights long ago and were sold exclusively to some distribution companies in some specific markets. Typically, sometimes the production companies don’t have the rights to do anything with their own content in those markets and when the business is evolving they find themselves in an incredibly annoying position. This is clearly something that is evolving but the backlog is of course there and is difficult to clear.

Stay tuned for some other form of content coming up real soon.
