TrackStick GPS Data Logger

Filed under: Travels — stephane @ 2:52 am

Got myself a Super Trackstick GPS Data Logger. A bit pricey but I wanted something that could stay active for a very long time to use for geotagging and without bothering about batteries. This one supposedly record points at configured interval and use vibration detection, batteries in theory last up to 8 weeks in optimal case.

I tested it quickly on the rooftop at the Joost office to get a lock on satellites, could only get a signal of from 3 satellites at that time. Accuracy is a bit difficult to figure out from this poor unscientific test. In theory it’s supposed to be 2.5m if I read the Trackstick specifications but that’s probably the optimal case where at least one vertical satellite and 6 others around

I have no idea how accurate is Google Map but it basically pinpoints at the Post Office on the other side of the road which if I’m calculating the great circle distance using a WGS84 Earth model gives me about 60m (in reality it’s probably less than that).

Considering there’s quite a bit of stretch due to the angle on that picture and some roads nearby are mapped deep inside buildings nearby, that might be OK enough. Would be nice to get a reference point on a known places and do some measurements.
